DLS Landscaping, Inc. started in 1996, when David L. Swanson was a freshman at Fremd High School.  David began his summer by cutting six neighbor's lawns and by the end of the summer he had over 25 homes.  The following year, David purchased his first truck and trailer and hired friends to work for him.  By his senior year in high school, David was doing almost 110 homes a week.  He hired three full-time workers that were a lot older than him to run his company while he was attending Fremd High School.

David went to college that year and still ran the business during his freshman year at Illinois State University.  During that time, David only did lawn maintenance, and his motto was “a perfect lawn everytime.”  This motto was built on quality and it is still used today.  At the end of his freshman year, David sold the business to another landscaper in the area which allowed him to concentrate on his school work.

Every summer, David worked for different landscaping companies to gain more experience on design, estimating, budgeting, construction practices, planting layouts, brick work and drainage.  On the weekends, you would find David working even more, doing side jobs – with employees from other landscape companies.  Some of these employees are still with the company to this day.

After college, David started up DLS Landscaping, Inc. again with some of his part-time helpers.  Many of these helpers turned into full-time workers and this is what started DLS Landscaping, Inc. to come back again.  Armed with an old 1985 dump truck, a pick-up truck, an old 1970 case – skidloader and an old bobcat trailer, DLS only did install work like design, new plantings, mulching, bush removal and stone edging.

Today, DLS has five crews, consisting of a brick team, landscape team, a drainage team and two maintenance teams.  DLS employs over 10 seasonal employees and three full-time employees.  DLS is continuing to grow thanks to dedicated employees and supportive cutomers.
